Bringing Huskies to Iceland: What You Need
Is it possible to bring my husky to Iceland?
Traveling with Pets to Iceland: Important Information
If you're planning a trip to Iceland and considering bringing your pet, it's essential to be aware of the regulations surrounding pet travel. This article provides crucial information for pet owners looking to visit this beautiful country.
Pets cannot be brought to and from Iceland.
You may only bring pets from Denmark to the Faroe Islands in summer if the stay exceeds three months and under special import regulations. Smyril Line recommends that passengers contact the local authorities before travelling. Check local import rules at hfs.fo.
Pet transport is subject to a supplementary charge, is at the owner’s own risk, and follows special regulations agreed with Smyril Line.
Pets are not allowed in the cabins. Violations incur a DKK 3,000 / EUR 405 cleaning fee.
When travelling with pets, a cage must be booked together with the ticket. The cages are numbered – 1–4 for small cages and 5–6 for large cages. Upon boarding, please collect the cage keys at reception. A deposit of DKK 200 is required and refunded upon return of the keys.
Large cages measure 80 cm (W) x 115 cm (H) x 130 cm (D).
Small cages measure 80 cm (W) x 55 cm (H) x 130 cm (D).
General Pet Travel Restrictions
Iceland has strict policies regarding the importation of pets. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed to be brought into the country under normal circumstances. If you have a dog, such as a husky or chihuahua, it is advisable to explore other destinations if traveling with them.
Service Dogs and Regulations
A common misconception is that service dogs can bypass these restrictions. However, even if you possess documentation for your service dog, Icelandic authorities do not allow any dogs on ships heading to their shores. This regulation applies uniformly regardless of whether the animal is classified as a service animal.
Alternative Options for Extended Stays
If you plan an extended stay in Iceland and wish to bring your dog along, there are specific procedures you must follow:
- Apply for Permission: You will need special permission from Keflavik Airport before bringing your pet into the country.
- No Sea Transport: Keep in mind that sea transport options do not permit pets; all arrangements would need to go through air travel instead.
Conclusion
The journey may seem challenging if you're hoping to include your furry friend on your travels. It’s best practice always to check current regulations well ahead of time when planning international trips with pets—especially when it comes to countries like Iceland that enforce stringent rules.
For those who cannot leave without their beloved companions but still want an adventure in nature's wonderland, consider alternative locations where pets are welcomed!
Please remember that regulations may change; thus staying updated by consulting official resources or contacting local authorities prior to making travel plans is highly recommended.
