How to book

We sale to and from Denmark, Faroe Islands and Iceland. You may book roundtrip (two-way) or a one way journey. You may find the sailing schedule here https://www.smyril-line.com/sailing-schedule

To book your trip please visit https://booking.smyrilline.fo/en/. You will be able to pre-book your meals there also. Please record your booking number as it is important to be provided should you need to make any changes.

You may also reserve your journey via email by emailing your order details even as a photo attachment to [email protected]. We will then process the booking for you and send the invoice via email, which can be paid with your payment card.

TERMS OF PAYMENT

We accept all major credit cards, debit cards and bank transfers.

Transportation & packages

  • For reservations made more than 30 days prior to departure, the first installment of 25% of the price, however a minimum of € 810, is payable to SML at the time of booking. The remainder is payable to SML no later than 30 days prior to departure.
  • For reservations made less than 30 days prior to departure, the full amount is payable to SML at the time of reservation.
  • Regarding travels with a value up to € 810, the full amount is payable to SML at the time of reservation.

The date of payment receipt is decisive. In the event of failure to comply with these regulations, SML reserves the right to cancel reservations and to retain fees in accordance with the terms of cancellation.

If you wish to pay for the trip with two different payment cards, unfortunately, this is not possible online. In that case, you should send your order by email, and we can send you an invoice that can be paid via bank transfer from multiple payment cards.

Booking and payment confirmation

You will receive booking confirmation via email once you complete your booking. It is possible to get a confirmation of your reservation in a PDF file. Please send your request to [email protected] or call us at +45 96558500 if you need additional confirmation.

How to manage existing booking and make changes, upgrades or downgrades

You may review and print your booking information here https://booking.smyrilline.fo/en/manage-booking/. You need to have your booking number. in order to use manage your reservation. 

You can certainly make changes to your reservation and add passengers to your car booking. Please send a mail to [email protected], and we can make the change for you. Please include your booking number in your email.

POST-RESERVATION CHANGES

Change of departure date will result in a change fee in addition to any resulting changes in the price.

  • Changes more than 30 days before departure: € 27 per leg.
  • Changes 30-15 days before departure: € 54 per leg.
  • Changes 14-8 days before departure: € 108 per leg.
  • Changes 7-0 days before departure:  € 162per leg.
  • Name change (if the booking shifts owner) will entail a change fee of € 27.

You can change details for a passenger without a fee later on.

Please note that the total change fee for your trip will be the sum of the fees for all the legs you change. Change fees are payable to SML at the time of the change.

If a booking is moved from one year to another, it is considered a cancellation and you need to make a new booking.

Cabins

All cabins are equipped with a TV, shower/toilet, closet and a small desk. 

Minibar - cold beverages & tasty snacks
If you book a cabin with window, you can book prebook the minibar. You can choose between a minibar with or without alcohol.

There is bedding and towels in the cabin for the number of occupants booked. There is also a small hairdryer available

These very spacious cabins are located on deck 5 and 6. The walkway, room and toilet is designed for wheelchair users. Furthermore the cabin is equipped with a specially designed sink, mirror and a toilet designed for handicapped passengers, and the door that leads into the cabin is wide enough for a wheelchair to roll through. The cabin also has the same equipment as the other cabins such as bed linen, towels and a closet, and in the bathroom a hairdryer and a point for an electric razor. In the cabin there is also a point with 240 volt and a TV. This kind of cabin is available with window and can be booked for 2-4 people. This type of cabin are not availeble on our online booking

Lower beds: L. 200 cm & W. 90 cm

Cabin with 1 lower berth (90x200 cm), 1 upper berth (90x200 cm) and en suite shower/toilet are booable for 1 person.The cabin is equipped with bed linen, towels, closet, TV and a point with 240 volt. In the bathroom there is a hairdryer and a point for an electric razor. 

If you are not able to choose a cabin on a departure, it is unfortunately because we are sold out on that date, and you have to try another date to depart. 

For your voyage from Hirtshals to Iceland on the 4th of June, 2024, if you are looking to have a private cabin for you and your daughter, you may want to consider booking a 4 berth cabin, as shared cabins accommodate only one person. The sailing time depends on what time of year you are sailing. Norröna has a weekly departure from Denmark to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. During the summer sailing Norröna has two weekly departures from Denmark to the Faroe Islands.

The North Atlantic region is notorious for its challenging weather conditions. These weather patterns, often influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream, can pose significant challenges for various activities, including sea travel. When it comes to departures, weather conditions are carefully monitored to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers and crew.

When unfavorable weather conditions are detected, departures may sometimes experience delays. To ensure the utmost safety, it becomes necessary to postpone departures until the weather conditions improve. However, it is important to note we do not cancel departures due to weather conditions. 

In the event of a weather-related delay, passengers are always notified in advance. This proactive approach allows individuals to adjust their plans accordingly and minimizes inconvenience.

a) When travelling from Hirtshals to Seyðisfjørður Saturday in the period 13.06-28.08 there is a 3 nights stay in the Faroes from Sunday to Wednesday.
b) When travelling from Hirtshals to Seyðisfjørður Tuesday in the period 13.06-28.08 you can travel directly to Seyðisfjørður.

Can I change my booking to a regular seat for the return trip?
Smyril Line does not offer the option to book only a chair or seat. When sailing with Smyril Line, it is mandatory to book a cabin or a bed in a gender-segregated couchette room. See more about our cabins here: https://www.smyril-line.com/ms-norroena/cabins

Can I request specific cabin in my reservation
Unfortunately, it is not possible to book a specific cabin number or location on the ship. You can make a note with your preferences, and we will do our best to accommodate them when allocating cabins

What is the price and what is included in the cost of a double room for two people?

Do you offer discount codes?
Unfortunately, we do not have any discount codes available for the ferry from Iceland to Denmark. Our prices are subject to change based on supply and demand.

Do you offer travel insurance?
Unfortunately Smyril Line does not offer travel insurance for your booking.

The necessary information for your deposit and confirmation of the reservation can be found on page 2 of the booking confirmation you received via email. Please note that for online bookings, payment is only possible with a credit card. The remaining payment can be made either by bank transfer or credit card.

Can I buy a one-way ticket from Iceland to Denmark?
Yes, you can purchase a one-way ticket from Iceland to Denmark. However, please note that there are no sailings available until March 20. On the top of the booking page, click on "One-Way" and proceed with booking your ticket. Please disregard any information regarding car bookings, if you are not bringing a car.

Can I make a payment for my travel booking online?
To pay for your trip, you need to log in to your booking confirmation. To log in, you will need your booking number and telephone number or email address. Please remember to include the '+' sign before the country code in your phone number.

Can a 13-year-old son book beds in a shared cabin for a trip to the Faroe Islands?
No, we do not recommend a 13-year-old booking beds in a shared cabin for a trip to the Faroe Islands. It is advisable to book a separate cabin in order to stay together.

Can I book a trip to the Faroe Islans with hotel?
Yes, you can book a trip to Tórshavn for individuals with a car and accommodation at Hotel Brandan. Why can't I complete my booking? I cannot buy ticket. Website errors, unable to book.
Unfortunately, we can not see why you are not able to complete your booking, please send us an email at [email protected] or by phone at +45 96558500 with all the necessary details. We will manually process your booking and ensure everything is taken care of. 

Can I make reservation for meals?
Certainly! Please send an email to [email protected] with your booking number and the desired meals. After receiving this information, we will be happy to add the meals to your reservation and send you an invoice for payment.

Do we need to book multiple cabins or can we just book one double cabin?
You can choose either one double cabin or two single cabins. For separate beds, you can choose a three- or four-bed cabin for dual occupancy.

When do I need to book the meals for my boat trip?
You have the option to prebook your meals for the boat trip or purchase them directly onboard. In some of the restaurants you will get a discount if you prebook. Please see more here: https://www.smyril-line.com/ms-norroena/restaurants-cafes

Why does my shopping cart become empty when I click the payment button while booking the ferry to Iceland?

What is the ETS Surcharge
In alignment with our commitment to environmental sustainability and in compliance with EU ETS regulations, an ETS surcharge will be added to the ticket price for each passenger. Valid for travels from January 1, 2024. The fee applies as follows:
From Denmark to the Faroe Islands: € 7 per person each way.
From Denmark to Iceland: € 14 per person each way.
All listed prices include this surcharge.

What are the credit card payment fees when booking online?
When booking online a credit card payment fee is charged by PBS/DIBS.

Can I use Maestro card onboard?
Yes, we do accept Maestro. However sometimes the internet connection is unreliable and it is best, if you bring an extra card and some cash.

Can we reserve time at the hot tub prior to boarding?
If you're looking to reserve the hot tub on our ferry, please note that reservations cannot be made before boarding. Once you're onboard, please contact the reception for more information. Reservations for the hot tub can only be made onboard the ferry at the reception on deck 5.

When you buy a package tour from us, we arrange the ferry crossing and the hotel stay.

It is not necessary to book the return journey immediately, but we recommend doing so well in advance of departure to ensure getting the desired space

What is the price difference if i buy a ticket close to the departure date?
The price of the ticket may vary if purchased closer to the day of departure due to dynamic pricing. It is recommended to book as soon as possible in order to secure the best available rate.

When making an online booking, the options for pre-ordering food will appear

Can I pay the remaining amount using my credit card?
Yes, you can pay the remaining amount using your credit card. If you have already paid the deposit, we can send you a payment link afterward for the balance due. Please let us know if you would like to proceed with this option.

Understanding Errors with Credit Card Payments

If you encounter an error while trying to make a credit card payment, it could be due to incorrect credit card information being entered. Some common reasons for such errors include

  • Postal code not matching the one associated with the credit card.
  • Incorrect credit card number being entered.
  • Expiration date of the credit card being incorrect.
  • CCV code (Card Verification Value) not being entered correctly.

Is the number of passengers including the driver taken into account for booking a ferry cabin?
When booking a trip, you pay for the number of persons, vehicles, and the type of cabin you choose.

How to cancel booking what are the fees?
Cancellation is possible according to our General Terms of Cancellation. However, please note that there is a cancellation fee, the percentage of the journeys price that will be forfeited depends on the time of cancellation. Refunds are possible in accordance with our General Terms of Cancellation. If you cancel more than 30 days prior to departure, there will be a a cancellation fee of 10%. For cancellations made between 30-15 days before departure, it will be 50% cancellation fee. Cancellations made within 14-8 days prior to departure will result in 75% cancellation fee.  Cancellations 7-0 days prior to departure: 100%.

What are the available payment methods?
We accept Bank transfer, Visa and MasterCard. We do not accept American Express.

 

What is the meaning of the ashore arrangements mandatory product?
The "ashore arrangements mandatory" product refers to a package that includes  accommodations for your stay on land during the trip. 

 

Do you accept payments in GBP?
Currently, we do not accept payments in GBP. We only accept DKK, Euro, or ISK. If you have any further questions about payment options, feel free to ask!

Can I travel as pedestrian, without a car?
Yes, you can travel from Hirtshals to the Faroe Islands and Iceland as a pedestrian without a car.

if i book a trip from denmark to iceland, can i walk down the ferry during the layover at faroe islands?
If you are traveling to Iceland during the period when we have a 5-hour stopover in the Faroe Islands on either the outbound or return journey, it will be possible to leave the Ferry during the stop. Just remember to find out when you need to be back.

does the ferrry go once or twice a week from denmark to iceland and how much it costs to ship with a 4x4 from denmark to iceland?
Smyril Line ferry does not offer sailings to Iceland in January as this service resumes in mid-March. There is a regular departure from Denmark to the Faroe Islands every Saturday, and from March we sail to Iceland once a week. can i bring a small trailer on the ferry along with my car?
To bring a trailer with your car on board please book a longer vehicle by contacting the sales office at [email protected]

can you recommend a cabin that is valid for two passengers?
If the system does not allow you to book a cabin for 2 (two) passengers, we recommend booking a cabin for 3 or 4 persons which is available at the same price as a 2 person cabin.

Do you travel to shetland this summer?
We stopped sailing to Shetland. We have a fixed schedule from Denmark to the Faroe Islands and Island only.

what is the vehicle's registration number?
It is the number plate

Can I bring my car and small trailer on the ferry?
Yes, you can bring your car and small trailer on the ferry. Please ensure that the height of your car is below 1.9 meters and provide us with the total length of your car and trailer for booking purposes. 
We have 3 categories for car transport on board.
1. Normal size with maximum of 1.90 meters high.
2. Maximum 2.50 meters high.
3. Over 2.50 meters high.
You will be presented with selection for your car while booking.

Can I travel without a car?
It is  possible to travel without a vehicle.

Can I book a ticket from Rotterdam to Iceland?
I apologize for the confusion. Unfortunately, we do not offer passenger services on the Rotterdam to Iceland route. Our ships only carry cargo on that particular route. However, if you are looking to travel from Denmark to Seydisfjordur in Iceland, we do have sailings available for passengers.

What is the procedure for making a reservation and later updating the vehicle registration number?
It is not a problem. You just write some numbers now, and when you have the correct number plate you send it to us, and we will change. We need to have the correct number plate before you arrive at the check - in

Can I book single beds for the first leg of my trip to Iceland, Faroe Islands, and Denmark?

Can I book a 2-person cabin with a double bed and a window for my toddler?
